Understand and manage human impacts on the environment using a multi-disciplinary approach.

There has never been greater need for scientists who understand how the Earth system functions and responds to human activities, and who can apply this knowledge in the broader social and economic context of managing the environment to ensure a sustainable future.

Research-led teaching with a multi-disciplinary focus will provide you with the knowledge and skills needed to address complex environmental problems such as climate change, air pollution and energy transitions.

Course content
You'll build a strong foundation in the physical sciences, providing the background knowledge you need to make informed judgements about environmental issues. You will also study the broader social, political and economic aspects of managing the environment.

Year 1
The first year modules give you an introduction to the fundamentals of environmental science, providing you with a foundation for more advanced material in the following years.

Concepts in Environmental Science (20 credits)
Data Analysis for Environmental Research (20 credits) 
Dynamic Earth (20 credits)
Ecological Principles for the Environment (20 credits)
Environment, Development and Society (10 credits)
Frontiers in Environmental Research (10 credits)
Environment Field Project for Environmental Science and Environmental Geography (currently to North York Moors National Park) (20 credits) 

Academic integrity module
In addition to the above you will also need to complete the online Academic Integrity module.

Year 2
You'll take a range of core modules to develop your knowledge of environmental science. You can then begin to tailor your degree to your own interests with a choice of option modules.

Environmental Geochemistry (20 credits)
Climate Change: Science, Observation and Impacts (10 credits)
Environmental Systems Project (10 credits)
Residential Field Trip (currently to Tenerife) (20 credits)

Option modules
You'll choose 40 credits from the below options:

Earth Processes and Landforms (20 credits)
Energy and Environment (20 credits)
Geographical Information Systems (10 credits)
Biogeography (10 credits)
Ocean Management and Conservation (10 credits)
Economics of Sustainable Development (10 credits)
Ecological Methodology (10 credits)
You can also replace some option modules with electives from other Departments.

Year 3
In Year 3 you undertake advanced research training to prepare the way to your fourth year of masters study. You can also select option modules to suit your interests and employment objectives.

Advanced Literature Review (20 credits)
Research Skills and Statistical methods (20 credits)

Either

Atmosphere and Ocean Science (20 credits), or
Pollution Monitoring, Assessment and Control (20 credits)

Option modules:
You'll choose three option modules:

Land Use Change and Management: Perspectives from agriculture and forestry (20 credits)
Environmental Hazards (20 credits)
Biodiversity and Society (20 credits)
Environmental and Natural Resource Economics (20 credits)
Or you can replace some option modules with electives from other Departments.

Year 4
In Year 4 you undertake further advanced training, vocational modules and a significant independent research project tailored to your research interests and career ambitions.
